A new genus, Atlanteuptychia gen. nov., for Euptychia ernestina (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Freitas,André V. L.; Barbosa,Eduardo P.; Santos,Jessie P.; Mielke,Olaf H. H..
Atlanteuptychia Freitas, Barbosa & Mielke, gen. nov. is proposed for Euptychia ernestina Weymer, 1911 and illustrated. This taxon lacks the posterior projection of the tegumen, a synapomorphy of Euptychia Hübner, 1818, and does not share morphological synapomorphies with Cyllopsis R. Felder, 1869 and Paramacera Butler, 1868, two Central American genera apparently closely related to Euptychia ernestina, based on molecular data. This evidence supports the proposition of a new genus endemic to the Atlantic Forest, A. ernestina stat. nov.

A new integrative assessment indicator for damage caused by major pests and diseases in the vineyard Organic Eprints
Delbac, L; Constant, N; Laveau, E; Thiéry, D; Smits, N; Roudet, J; Mérot, A; Wéry, J; Fermaud, M.
An original and integrative evaluation indicator has been developed to quantify the cumulated damage from major pests and diseases affecting grape bunches: downy mildew, powdery mildew, gray mould and tortricid moths. It made it possible to estimate the associated crop losses and to relate them to the plant protection strategy in different modes of production (organic farming, in-transition, conventional). Thus, overall plant losses were higher in 2012 than in 2011. The in-transition growers’ strategy, with reduced copper doses but increased numbers of sprays, led to a 20% increase in average severity on bunches (essentially due to Downy mildew). The more pragmatic approach of experienced organic growers and conventional ones (higher doses and fewer...

A new low molecular mass alkaline cyclodextrin glucanotransferase from Amphibacillus sp. NRC-WN isolated from an Egyptian soda lake Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Al-Sharawi,Samar Z.R.; Ibrahim,Abdelnasser S.S.; El-Shatoury,Einas H; Gebreel,Hassan M; Eldiwany,Ahmad.
Background: Cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) is one of the most industrially important enzymes used in the commercial production of cyclodextrins (CDs). Alkaliphilic bacteria have attracted much interest in the last few decades because of their ability to produce extracellular enzymes that are active and stable at high pH values. Here, we report the isolation of a new CGTase from alkaliphilic bacteria collected from Egyptian soda lakes and describe the purification and biochemical characterization of this CGTase. Results: Screening for CGTase-producing alkaliphilic bacteria from sediment and water samples collected from Egyptian soda lakes located in the Wadi Natrun valley resulted in the isolation of a potent CGTase-producing alkaliphilic...

A New Methodology for Assessing the Effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas OceanDocs
Angulo-Valdés, J.A.; Hatcher, B.G..

A new Neotropical species of Liothrips (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) associated with Ludwigia (Myrtales:Onagraceae) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Zamar,María I.; Hernández,María C.; Soto-Rodríguez,Gerardo A.; Retana-Salazar,Axel P..
Liothrips ludwigi (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) is described and a key to differentiate it from the other four species present in Argentina is provided. This species can be distinguished by the following characters: major setae on head and pronotum slender and brown yellowish; anteromarginal setae short (14µ-21µ), and metanotum reticulated with hexagonal cells. Liothrips ludwigi feeds and reproduces on Ludwigia grandiflora (Michx.) Greuter & Burdet and L. grandiflora ssp. hexapetala (Hook. & Arn.) G.L. Nesom & Kartesz (Myrtales: Onagraceae). This is the first record of the association between Liothrips and this family of plants.

A New Paradigm for Adaptive Management Ecology and Society
Felton, Adam; Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences; adam.felton@slu.se; Rosvall, Ola; Rosvall Forest Consulting AB; Ola.rosvall@gmail.com.
Uncertainty is a pervasive feature in natural resource management. Adaptive management, an approach that focuses on identifying critical uncertainties to be reduced via diagnostic management experiments, is one favored approach for tackling this reality. While adaptive management is identified as a key method in the environmental management toolbox, there remains a lack of clarity over when its use is appropriate or feasible. Its implementation is often viewed as suitable only in a limited set of circumstances. Here we restructure some of the ideas supporting this view, and show why much of the pessimism around AM may be unwarranted. We present a new framework for deciding when AM is appropriate, feasible, and subsequently successful. We thus present a new...

A new potentially toxic Azadinium species (Dinophyceae) from the Mediterranean Sea, A. dexteroporum sp. nov. ArchiMer
Percopo, Isabella; Siano, Raffaele; Rossi, Rachele; Soprano, Vittorio; Sarno, Diana; Zingone, Adriana.
A new photosynthetic planktonic marine dinoflagellate, Azadinium dexteroporum sp. nov., is described from the Gulf of Naples (South Tyrrhenian Sea, Mediterranean Sea). The plate formula of the species, Po, cp, X, 4, 3a, 6, 6C, 5?S, 6'" and 2, is typical for this recently described genus. Azadinium dexteroporum is the smallest rep-resentative of the genus (8.5m average length, 6.2m average width) and shares the presence of a small antapical spine with the type species A.spinosum and with A.polongum. However, it differs from all other Azadinium species for the markedly asymmetrical Po plate and the position of the ventral pore, which is located at the right posterior end of the Po plate. Another peculiarity of A.dexteroporum is the pronounced concavity of...

A New Quantitative Method for Predicting Forensic Racial Identity Based on Dental Morphological Trait Analysis International Journal of Morphology
Alsoleihat,Firas.
Few previous studies have demonstrated the likelihood of using the worldwide patterns of dental morphological variation in prediction of ancestry in the context of forensic dental anthropology. This paper introduces a new quantitative method for predicting forensic racial identity of individual specimens based on dental morphological trait analysis. In this study, the inter-population variation in the expression frequency of 16 non-metric tooth crown traits, manifested on the permanent dentition, was used for analysis. The method was developed from the notion that dental morphological characteristics, when viewed as sets of traits rather than isolated variables, can be utilized to calculate the relative probability that an individual belongs to a...

A new species and new records of linyphiid spiders (Araneae: Linyphiidae) from Amazonas, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rodrigues,Everton Nei Lopes; Lemos,Yuji; Brescovit,Antonio Domingos.
Linyphiidae is currently the second richest family of spiders in the order Araneae but is poorly known and studied in Brazil, particularly in the northern states. In this contribution we describe a new species of Exechopsis Millidge, 1991 from the State of Amazonas, based on both males and females. The male of Meionetaadami Millidge, 1991 is described for the first time. Mermessus conjunctus (Millidge, 1991), Novafrontina uncata (F. O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1902), Sphecozone fastibilis (Keyserling, 1886), Sphecozone ignigena (Keyserling, 1886) and Vesicapalpus simplex Millidge, 1991 are recorded for the first time from Amazonas. Sphecozone crassa (Millidge, 1991) are presented additional record from Amazonas.
